A senior official in the party of the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has given the strongest indication yet that the parliamentary election due next month will be postponed. He said a delay of about two months will be realistic. xx reports from Islamabad.

The decision on whether or not to postpone the elections will not be taken officially until the Election Committee holds its emergency meeting on Monday. But this is the clearest indication yet that voting is unlikely to take place as scheduled on January 8. A spokesman for the government has told the AP news agency that he expects it to be delayed by up to two months. The announcement coincides with the reading of Ms Bhutto's will by her 19-year-old son Bilawal, who many believe will be named as her successor. The PPP is deciding whether to take part in elections or not.

Intense discussions are under way in Kenya to end the deadlock over Thursday's presidential election. Both President Mwai Kibaki and his main opponent Raila Odinga are claiming victory and made widespread accusations of vote-rigging. Mr. Odinga has demanded a full revaluation of the count. Adam Mynott reports from Nairobi.

Raila Odinga spoke publicly for the first time since polling day. He said he had won the presidential race and he called for a full revaluation of the results that the Electoral Commission of Kenya has been announcing here at their headquarters in Nairobi. A report quoting an official from President Kibaki's party says they will be prepared to accept such process. It might take many hours or even days to complete. It is now approaching three days since polls closed. Tension and anger is growing because of the huge delay.

Iraq Interior Ministry says Saddam loyalists were remembering him at his grave in his home village of Awja in central Iraq and in whole city of Tikrit. The Election Commission in Pakistan says the violence which erupted following the assassination of the opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has hindered preparations for next month's parliamentary elections. It's to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to decide if the vote can still go ahead. More than 30 people have been killed in the unrest. One of Ms Bhutto's political rivals, the opposition party leader Nawaz Sharif is visiting her grave today. xx reports from Islamabad.

Other opposition leaders have joined Nawaz Sharif to call for a boycott of the elections, insisting it would be impossible for candidates to campaign in public in the current climate. The US State Department has been pushing for the elections to go ahead if it's safe to do so, and the government hasn't announced plans to postpone them. But there may be practical reasons why the elections may not be held. The Chief Election Commissioner has called an emergency meeting in Islamabad for the 31st because of the law and order situation.

Benazir Bhutto's party has rejected government explanations of how she died. To hear that Ms Bhutto fell from an impact from a bump on the sunroof is absolutely ... it's rubbish, it's dangerous nonsense, because it implies that there was no assassination attempt when that has been shown on all private television channels. She did not concuss her head against the sunroof.

A spokesman for the Taleban leader xx has denied he was involved in the death of Ms Bhutto.

A team of scientists in London is developing a technique which could allow surgeons to carry out complex procedures without having to cut into patients' skin. The team at Imperial College has been given four million dollars to build and test a surgical robot called the i-Snake. Mark Saunders reports.

The i-Snake, a long tube housing special motors, sensors and imaging tools, has the potential to allow complex heart and bowel operations to be carried out without making any incision. BBC news with Jerry Schmitt.

The leader of one of Pakistan's main opposition parties Nawaz Sharif is due to visit the grave of his assassinated rival Benazir Bhutto, who was buried at her family's mausoleum on Friday. When he was Prime Minister in the 1990s, Mr. Sharif tried to jail Ms Bhutto on corruption charges. But the BBC correspondent in Pakistan says he is now trying to associate himself with her memory. More than 30 people have been killed in the violence which erupted following her killing. Senior figures in the Bush administration have been contacting their international allies and Pakistani political parties. A US State Department spokesman said Pakistan's elections should go ahead on schedule if they could be held smoothly and safely. He said it was important that Pakistan continue down a democratic path. xx reports from Islamabad.

International focus is on continuing the democratic progress Ms. Bhutto had campaigned for. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was among the first world leaders to sign the book of condolences for the former Prime Minister. The demand now is to find those responsible for killing Ms. Bhutto. The government says it has evidence that al-Qaeda is behind the attack. Ms Bhutto's supporters reject the claim as (an) attempt to divert attention from the real culprits.

BACKGROUND

Ms Bhutto's two terms as prime minister, from 1988-90 and from 1993-96, both ended in controversy and charges of corruption against Bhutto and her husband.

Nawaz Sharif was elected prime minister in 1990 as the PML won a majority position in the national assembly. He stepped down in 1993 after feuding with President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, but was elected again in 1997.

With about half the votes counted in the general election in Kenya, it's clear that the cabinet of President Mwai Kibaki has been emphatically rejected, but the battle for the presidency between Mr. Kibaki and his leading opponent Raila Odinga will be very close. Our East Africa correspondent Karen Allen reports from Nairobi.

Voters have delivered a clear message to President Kibaki's government: they are dissatisfied with this delivery and they want change. Twenty cabinet ministers including prominent figures like the Vice President and Foreign Minister have lost their seats and a number of junior ministers have also gone. But all eyes are focused on the presidential race. It looks like voter turnout has reached record levels here in Kenya. Raila Odinga, the main challenger, has maintained his lead, but as more votes poured in overnight, the gap between him and President Mwai Kibaki, who's fighting for a second term, has significantly narrowed.

The official news agency in China says Beijing will consider allowing the people of Hong Kong to elect their own leader directly by 2017. The move comes in response to a report submitted by Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang which requested direct elections by 2012. From Beijing here's James Reynolds.

During a televised press conference in Hong Kong, the territory's Chief Executive Donald Tsang said the target date for universal suffrage had now been defined, the year 2017. We must treasure this hard-earned opportunity. Up till now, Hong Kong's leader, its Chief Executive, has always been chosen by an 800-member election committee. This committee is loyal to Beijing.

The main opposition candidate in Kenya's presidential and parliamentary elections Raila Odinga has cast his vote in what's being seen as the closest contest in Kenya's history. Polls suggest incumbent President Mwai Kibaki is facing a tough challenge. There were some problems as Mr. Odinga tried to cast his ballot, as our correspondent Karen Allen reports.

incumbent = adj. [only before noun] having an official position:

The delay to Raila Odinga being able to cast his vote was put down to technical problems with voter list here in his political backyard Kibera. Then quickly they confirmed the presidential hopeful was on the voter register, clearing the way for him to vote. So when the firebrand politician turned up to make a second attempt to vote, crowds were ecstatic, cheering along the road. These incidents though will fuel suspicions in Raila's political camp of a plot to rig the polls, But other suspect it was simply a bureaucratic botch-up.

The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert , the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are meeting in Jerusalem today, in an effort to try to stop the peace process being overshadowed by a row of Israel's plans to build new homes in the occupied territories. For their part, the Israelis are concerned about security issues. From Jerusalem, Bethany Bell.

There've been two sets of talks between Israelis and Palestinians since the peace process was relaunched last month, but both were dominated by the row of the Israel's plans to build hundreds of news homes in the Har Homa settlement in East Jerusalem. The Palestinians have accused the Israelis of trying to destroy the peace talks. [BBC] 071227 Dozens Died In Oil Pipeline Explosion In Lagos ...

BBC news with Jonathan Wheatley.

At least 28 people are thought to have been killed in an oil pipeline explosion in the commercial capital Lagos. From there Alex Last has sent this report.

Police said the accident occurred in the early hours of Christmas morning near a village on the coast just outside Lagos. Dozens have gathered with buckets and jerry cans to collect fuel leaking from a pipeline when it suddenly exploded. Rescue workers who arrived at the scene described seeing dozens of charred bodies. They said it's still not clear just how many died, nor is it clear if the pipeline was deliberately tapped into. But such incidents are all too common in Nigeria, where 77% live in poverty and many are willing to take huge risks to obtain free fuel. Last year more than 250 people were killed in a similar pipeline explosion in Lagos.

Many of them are thought to have been made between 5000 and 10000 years ago.

The 24-year-old Panmure man was stabbed on Ridge Rd in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing to try to prevent the expulsion from Afghanistan of two senior representatives of the European Union and the United Nations. They've been accused of meeting Taleban leaders in the south, thereby posing a threat to Afghanistan's national security. The UN spokesman in Kabul Aleem Siddique told the BBC the affair was a misunderstanding.

An important part, if we are to achieve peace and stability in Helmand provinces, is (that) to speak to all the parties on the ground, (and) that includes people who are not the biggest fans of the government, so that we can get people to commit to the government of Afghanistan, this does not equate to talking to terrorists.
